Accelitech LLC has announced the launch of a new CyberKnife program at Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care on the campus of the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Conn. The Accuray CyberKnife System was secured through a joint venture created by Accelitech — a partnership comprising physicians, the hospital and Accelitech.

"It's a privilege to partner with the oldest outpatient cancer care facility in the state of Connecticut," says Kerwin Brandt, CEO of Accelitech. "The addition of the CyberKnife program exemplifies the commitment of the hospital leadership and its physicians, to offer the best available cancer treatment options to its patients."

According to Dr. Joseph G. Cardinale, director of radiation oncology at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, the CyberKnife provides patients with an alternative to invasive surgery and the ability to treat tumors in fewer sessions. Traditional radiation therapy often requires upwards of 45 treatments, while the CyberKnife requires a maximum of five treatments lasting one to two hours each.

"Radiation oncology has traditionally been many treatments over a longer period of time. Now, that's no longer necessarily true," Cardinale says. "It will improve the coordination of radiation and chemotherapy. I haven't been this excited in a really long time."

Stereotactic radiosurgery equipment is quickly becoming a must have for state-of-the-art cancer facilities and neurosurgical centers. For many hospitals, however, raising the necessary $5 to $8 million in capital to initiate these programs can be a challenge, particularly in the current economic climate. The Accelitech model allows hospitals to secure advanced technology that they might not otherwise be able to provide to their patients and physicians.
