Chicago, IL, August 18, 2008 — Accelitech LLC has announced the start of patient treatments at a new CyberKnife program located in Mount Laurel, N.J., a stand-alone, hospital-based facility operated by Cooper University Hospital The acquisition of the CyberKnife was made possible through a joint venture partnership created by Accelitech.
“The Cyberknife technology combined with our Gamma Knife® PerfexionTM, means Cooper can offer the complete multidisciplinary approach to non-invasive cancer care for patients with tumors throughout the body,” said Simon J. Samaha, M.D., senior executive vice president and chief medical officer at Cooper University Hospital. “The superior technology that CyberKnife, Gamma Knife and other radiation oncology treatments offered at Cooper, means we have the most comprehensive approaches to treating more tumors than ever before.”
The Cooper Cancer Institute is an affiliate of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and is designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. It offers the latest clinical trials, innovative therapies, and comprehensive treatment options for breast cancer, gynecologic oncology, genitourinary cancer, lung cancer, leukemia/lymphoma and gastrointestinal cancer, as well as complementary medicine and cancer genetics programs.
“With the addition of the CyberKnife, the Cooper Cancer Institute continues to offer the latest and most advanced cancer treatment options available today,” says Kerwin Brandt, CEO of Accelitech. “As stereotactic radiosurgery progresses into more and more extracranial applications, the CyberKnife will keep Cooper on the cutting edge.”
Stereotactic radiosurgery equipment is quickly becoming a must have for state-of-the-art cancer facilities and neurosurgical centers. For many hospitals, however, raising the necessary $5 to $8 million in capital to initiate these programs can be a challenge, particularly in the current economic climate. The Accelitech model allows hospitals to secure advanced technology that they might not otherwise be able to provide to their patients and physicians.
